It’s All About Accessories

Great style is not only about the clothes, it’s all about accessories too!

Accessorising really is an art, and the right accessories are the critical difference between just putting on an outfit and rocking an outfit.

Begin With Your Base

I love to think of clothes and accessories like this…your body is a beautiful blank canvas, and on the canvas you create a picture of colours, patterns and textures with the clothes you wear. Now this picture in and of itself is wonderful, but when you add the extra details with accessories – a pop of extra colour here, a touch of movement, texture or sparkle there – you turn your picture into a masterpiece!

In order to create a masterpiece, the base elements that make up your outfit need to be considered carefully. Are your fabric colours neutral tones or vibrant? Have you chosen bold or intricate patterns or is everything plain? Are there interesting textural details with stitching or embellishments?

If there’s a lot going on, the ideal is to keep your accessories simple and minimal. Delicate touches here and there enhance bold patterns and colours rather than clashing with them. Alternatively, if your base is completely neutral, then big, bold or dramatic accessories will take your outfit to the next level.

Add Layers

Layers can be added to an outfit in a multitude of ways, allowing extra interest through colour, print and textures. For example: hats, scarves, belts, an open shirt or cardigan or a big, bold statement necklace are all things you can introduce to bring a unique twist to an outfit. Adding one primary accessory can act as an anchor that brings your whole outfit together in a cohesive and stylish way.

Pieces That Pop!

I’m a firm believer that every woman should own a few pieces of personal statement jewellery that can be worn
with just about everything.

If you don’t understand what I mean by statement jewellery, these are pieces that are unique and bold and portray an image of who you are. My statement pieces are a horn necklace, a pair of earrings and a simple pearl necklace as well as a multi-strand one. I find these give me all the versatility I need for every occasion and outfit choice, and they are now my go-to statements with my personal style.

A word of caution though! When you love the statement jewellery you have, it can be tempting to wear too many pieces of it all at once. So, my top tip when considering your jewellery is to make one statement per outfit…either just a statement necklace or statement earrings with a statement bracelet, and then keep the rest of your jewellery minimal.

Your Outfit & Jewellery Need to Vibe

Whatever your jewellery choice, you need to ensure that it vibes with the style of your outfit, so that your overall look stays stylish and chic, rather than jarring and confusing to the eye.

For instance, if you love a floaty boho dress or skirt, pile on layers of delicate chains and rings. If a chic pencil skirt with a simple shirt is your vibe for the day, chandelier earrings and a thin gold chain looks hot! For evening, a sexy sheath dress with a statement necklace and simple elegant stud earrings is stunning. Or if cool casual is your theme, wide leg pants and a fitted tank paired with a cuff bracelet and thin gold hoops is perfect.

Sync Your Shoes

Your outfit masterpiece is not complete until the perfect pair of shoes are adorning your feet, and these absolutely must complement and not compete with your overall look.

Add some extra WOW factor to a neutral outfit with vibrantly coloured or unusually detailed shoes or boots. Because your base is understated (with the exception of your jewellery perhaps) you can really go to town with the statement you make with your footwear.

Conversely an intricate and exquisitely beaded evening gown yearns to be paired with beautiful but simple shoes (think Cinderella and those gorgeous glass slippers!).

Above all else your shoes need to fit the occasion and be comfortable – I’m sorry ladies but there are some activities where a pair of 4-inch Jimmy Choo’s just aren’t appropriate and can look a tad ridiculous!

Bring on the Bags!

I’m all for beautiful bags and I love the big ones by Prada and Miu Miu, but I have to say that nowadays I prefer to opt for the practicality and lightness that a smaller bag gives me.

When it comes to choosing the perfect bag for the occasion, I have a little checklist of questions I run it by:

Is there enough room for my purse and phone?

Does it fit with the look and feel of my outfit?

Do I need to carry a laptop or notebook or any other bits and pieces for the day?

These simple questions help me to decide exactly what style of bag I need for the occasion and, just as importantly, what size. The perfect size ensures I only carry with me exactly what I need, rather than weighing myself down having everything but the kitchen sink hanging over my shoulder!

To wrap things up, I’ve had a little bit of fun with photoshop and created these two images to illustrate how different accessories can totally change the look and feel of exactly the same outfit.
